Action Greensboro opened in 2001 as a way to enhance the quality of life for people living in the city.
Six Foundations, the group that funds Action Greensboro, went on a trip and decided it was important to conduct a study to find out what improvements Greensboro residents wanted to see in their city.
Action Greensboro, a sister organization to the Greensboro Chamber of Commerce, is committed to telling Greensboro’s story; attracting new residents and businesses, while also supporting economic development efforts.
The organization continues to create initiatives that focus on the continuum of K-12 to career.
The synerG Young Professionals program leads initiatives with the mission to attract, engage and connect young professionals to Greensboro.
Another program targeting young people is the Opportunity Greensboro Fellows Program, which is directed by Lizzy Tahsuda. Opportunity Greensboro is a collective made of the seven university and college chancellors in Greensboro as well as business leaders. The Fellows Program, a part of Opportunity Greensboro, gives students a 10-week paid internship experience over the summer.
Lastly, there is the Downtown Greenway, in collaboration with the City of Greensboro, which is a planned four-milepaved urban trail for walking and biking that defines Greensboro’s Center City and serves as the hub for the community’s system of trails and greenways.
First, Action Greensboro helped to bring new places and events for community convening including The National Folk Festival, LeBauer and Center City Parks as well as the Grasshoppers Stadium.
“It brings the community together - everyone is just together having a good time,” Tucker said, referring to the areas they helped to have built for the city residents.
She also thinks all the young professional programs they offer are achievements because they showcase Greensboro to young people and students who may have not been downtown before nor have met many people with similar interests.
Action Greensboro does not need a specific set of stable volunteers; however, they do need situational volunteers for large events. To find out more about the nonprofit, visit their website listed above.
